Position Summary:
This role is responsible managing the day-to-day operations of the NY manufacturing plant. The primary deliverables are SQDC – safety, quality, delivery and cost.
This role oversees the manufacturing and production of Steinway pianos to ensure pianos are built on schedule, and within the high-quality standards and cost objectives for Steinway Americas. Areas of responsibility include all production areas - leading and managing the Production Managers, Supervisors and hourly union employees.
Main Responsibilities:
Strategy and Development
• Ensure manufacturing strategies and processes are in place to meet business objectives and operational needs in terms of safety, quality, delivery and cost
• Evaluate the manufacturing challenges and take action to mitigate risks and develop solutions
• Contribute to overall business strategy and annual budget process
• Initiate and develop creative and innovative manufacturing processes
• Develop and drive a culture of quality, productivity and efficiency throughout the factory
Operational Management:
• Accountable for completing and delivering production plan on schedule
• Lead, develop and implement safety, quality and productivity improvement programs across manufacturing operations
• Achieve optimum employee levels with the least amount of overhead and overtime to meet annual budgetary plan
• Minimize scrap and rework through the development of a continuous improvement culture encompassing lean principles
• Provide manufacturing input on new designs at early stages in the new product development process, to ensure manufacturability of product while maintaining quality, safety and environmental standards and achieving cost targets
• Identify opportunities to streamline operations or introduce new tools and technology
People Management:
• Provide leadership, coordination and coaching to team, ensuring they are trained to enable them to achieve the operational and financial metrics within their areas of responsibility
• Set department objectives and metrics to monitor and manage ongoing progress and performance, continuous improvement, high quality work and cost reductions
• Ensure strong communication between teams under leadership to facilitate exchange of information and in order to implement change and improvements
• Ensure that the function operates in accordance with any health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well being of staff and visitors
• Complete regular performance reviews, manage attendance, holidays, disciplinary issues and procedures as appropriate
Financial and Budget Management:
• Contribute to the annual manufacturing budget and forecast process
• Manage to the manufacturing budgets, meeting agreed upon cost of goods and profit targets
• Manage the budget from identification to completion of projects
Relationship Management:
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance
• Proactively work with product development, sales, engineering, service and other departments to get input and incorporate best practices into the manufacturing environment
• Work collaboratively, negotiate and engage with key stakeholders to provide updates and share relevant information
• Recommend solutions to manufacturing challenges and obstacles without compromising quality and optimizing cost
• Formulate and recommend manufacturing policies and programs that guide the organization in maintaining and improving its competitive position and the profitability of the operation.
Qualifications, Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree required
• 10+ years of experience leading a manufacturing function with a proven track record in strategic manufacturing leadership delivering effective manufacturing strategies, policies, processes and systems
• Formal experience with lean manufacturing with an emphasis on quality
• Experience building teams to achieve business goals and operational priorities
• Team oriented leader with strong communication skills. Must have exceptional skills in articulating plans, expectations and goals. Strong experience building teams, setting goals, and providing feedback and coaching
• Strong customer focus
• Has experience in quality and process/methods improvement
• Experience leading a factory safety environment that promotes compliance, housekeeping and genuine concern for employee safety at all levels
